Lake Bled – Slovenia family holiday

Lake Bled is a beautiful setting and perfect for Slovenia family holidays. There’s a castle, gorgeous blue waters and the prettiest backdrop of mountains.

Close enough to Ljubljana for day trips this is a lovely part of the country to enjoy fresh air and outdoor pursuits.

Ljubljana is such an underrated capital city. It has such a cool vibe to it with cafes lining the river and the whole city full of places to grab an ice cream (at one of the cheapest prices you’ll find them across Europe).

Kids will love the House of Illusions or the fun Minicity (a little like Kidzania). The Castle which overlooks the whole of Ljubljana is a fun visit with kids.

And there are lots of great restaurants that are very family-friendly.

Lake Bled

Lake Bled is one of the most iconic sights of Slovenia – a gorgeous lake with a fairytale like church on an island in the middle of it.

Bled is somewhere that really is as magical as it looks in the photos, depending on when you go it may just be filled with tourists (avoid July and August if you can).

That said it is still a beautiful place to visit and packed full of water-based activities and chances to get out hiking and mountain biking.

Bohinj

26 kilometres from Lake Bled is an arguably even more beautiful lake at Bohinj.

It is less well known and because of this less crowded. It’s also a great place to base yourself for a Slovenia family holiday as it’s easy to get from here to many of the other key sights in the country.

It’s a great area for active holidays from horse riding to kayaking, but if you’re looking for something more relaxed then paddling in the crystal clear lake waters is a great tonic.

Koper is Slovenia’s fifth largest town and while there is certainly an industrial slant to some of it there is a gorgeous historic centre which is beautiful to wander through.

Set only three miles from the border with Italy there’s a real melting pot of cultures here both in terms of the languages spoken and food.

Head across the bay to the resort town of Ankaran which borders the beautiful Debeli Rtič Landscape Park.

The mix here of seaside and pine forest is intoxicating.

Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora is set in the Julien Mountains and is another destination for great active, outdoor holidays.

The town is very pretty and fairytale like with a very picturesque church in the centre.

While there’s plenty here to do in the summer months Kranjska Gora really comes in to its own in winter.

Then this town is perfect as a ski destination with a great ski school and runs to keep all levels of skier happy.

There are also the winter activities like husky sledding, snowshoeing and even an ice climbing centre.

Piran

Piran is a really beautiful town set on the Adriatic Coast.

It has a gorgeous historic centre packed full of narrow alleyways which will make you feel as though you’ve stepped in to a history book.

Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia and well worth a visit.

This is a city that’s easy to wander through and very picturesque. Visit Maribor Castle, run around in the lovely city park and take a stroll along the Drava River.
