For family holidays in the Algarve the PortoBay Falesia is a great choice. This resort has some incredible views and access to a gorgeous eight kilometre long sandy beach. It’s only five minutes walks to all the shops and restaurants of Olhos d’Agua. Stay at the hotel on a bed & breakfast or half board basis. There’s an indoor as well as an outdoor pool and children have their own dedicated kids pool. There are tennis courts, a games room and lots of other activities on offer here.

There are a number of swimming pools here including a really fun splash park which kids will love. The beach is close by and there’s a mini train that runs down to the nearest, the Blue Flag Torralta Beach. With a great kids club which goes up to 16 years old, children’s playground and indoor soft play and tv area for kids this is an Algarve family holiday that everyone will love.

Jupiter Albufeira Hotel is a wonderful Algarve family resort, packed full of amenities to keep kids happy. There are 2 children’s pools and a kids club up to age 12 but also a teens room for up to 16 year olds. There’s a children’s playground and also a splash park for kids. Best of all is the Jupiter World aqua park which has six water slides and lots of chutes, perfect for cooling off in the sun and keeping children entertained. Pine Cliffs is one of the great luxury family hotels the Algarve has on offer. Situated about 20 minutes from Albufeira this is a peaceful area of the region but easy to get to all the main sites and attractions. The hotel is large but doesn’t feel it. There are various interconnecting rooms and suites meaning it’s possible to accommodate most size families. There’s a tennis academy, swimming pools (both indoors and outdoors), a great kids club and a fun, large outdoor playground. It’s a short walk to the beach, a golf course here too and a number of restaurants making it one of the best family friendly hotels in the Algarve.

This is somewhere really different and an escape from the more touristy parts of the Algarve. Hotel Rural Quinta do Marco is near to the Caldeirão Ridge and surrounded by peaceful farmland. Tavira is around 7 miles away. There are great family rooms here making this a really affordable way to experience and fall in love with this part of the Portugal. On site there’s a restaurant, pool and also activities on offer for kids including donkey rides, helping with the animals and (in season) joining in to harvest the olives. This is a really special hotel which all the family will love.

Upmarket Vale do Lobo provides an opportunity for a self catering stay within a resort environment. This five star resort is 17 km from Albufeira and just a 20 minute drive from Faro Airport. There are a huge number of different styles of accommodation, from apartments to villas with private pools. The resort is so well set up with 14 tennis courts, 15 restaurants and a beautiful golden beach on its doorstep. There is a free resort bus, shops including a supermarket and newsagent and golf courses within walking distance. The kids club is great and runs various activities.

Bayside Salgados is around 6km from Albufeira’s Old Town and a great budget friendly resort for families. There’s an outdoor swimming pool and children’s playground and is around 800km from the beach. They have one bedroom apartments which come with double sofa beds making them great for those ravelling with kids. Large groups (including Hen and Stag groups) are not permitted at this hotel as they are very focussed on their family friendly offering. There is an onsite restaurant for breakfast and dinner.

Martinhal Sagres is a wonderful, family friendly luxury resort situated just outside of Sagres on the far west of the Algarve. This resort has accommodation for all family sizes in its self catering villas, some of which have private pools. The resort itself has a number of pools, including an indoor pool and lots of other facilities most notably its brilliant kids club which caters for all ages up to and including teenagers. There is a beautiful beach here (which can be a little windy, particularly out of season, but this does make it great for wind sports). The whole resort is filled with family friendly elements including playgrounds and also staff in the restaurants to play games and make crafts with the kids while you eat. It’s one of the great Algarve family resorts for families and understandable why so many return year after year.

Overlooking the ocean this five star resort is a perfect escape for families looking for luxury in the Algarve. It’s a large hotel with nearly 250 bedrooms and as well as interconnecting and suites they also have family rooms. There are some gorgeous pools, a playground and a fantastic kids club with plenty of activities going on for kids during the summer season. Just outside of Carvoeiro (around a 40 minute drive to Faro airport) and a short walk to some great beaches this is a great location.

Where is best to stay in the Algarve?

Where is best to stay in the Algarve to some extent depends on the type of holiday you’re looking for. I love the area around the Ria Formosa Natural Park but Albufeira is much livelier if you like more activities. Vilamoura is also popular with families – we have listed Algarve family resorts in all of these locations.

Is the Algarve safe for children?

You have to be careful anywhere in the world you travel with children but in general I would say the Algarve is very safe for children and we’ve never felt anything but very relaxed on our trips.
