Oxford is a full of dreamy spires but just outside is a hotel that oozes history. The Macdonald Bear Hotel in Woodstock almost backs on to the grounds of Blenheim Palace and yet provides easy access to the city. This former 13tth century coaching inn has bags of character with beamed ceilings and creaky floorboards. It provides a very comfortable family stay though with great family rooms where those travelling with kids can spread out and relax.
The family rooms have a lounge with sofa bed alongside a bedroom and a separate single bedroom which gives plenty of space. There’s a really nice restaurant downstairs, where countless weary travellers through the centuries would have taken refreshment. Some of the bedrooms are in the converted stables so don’t have the same character as the main building.

We loved our stay at the Macdonald Bear Hotel. The location was great – easy to get in to the city and within walking distance of the gorgeous Blenheim Palace. The hotel itself was really quirky and we loved the character. We stayed in the main building and thought it had been really sympathetically renovated to provide a really comfortable family stay. We loved all the little touches like dressing gowns for all the family with little labels including “little bear”, “medium bear” and “bigger bear”.
